Brac & Sumartin - Villa Barbara

Brač is the largest island in Dalmatia with a length of about 40 km and a width of 12 km. Brač is situated between Split and the island of Hvar. With an area of 395 km² it is the third largest island of the Adriatic. From the mainland it separates the Bracer Canal, which is up to 78 meters deep. On the western side are the island of Šolta and the seas of Splitska vrata, to the south are the island of Hvar and the sea line of Hvar (Hvarski canal) up to 91 meters deep.

The highest point, the Vidova Gora, is also the highest elevation in the Adriatic Sea (778 meters). The whole island of Brac is like a green natural area.

The island is manifold through the quiet coast with beautiful beaches and coves with crystal clear water, as well as small villages, covered in summer tourism, as well as the charm of the countryside with its quarries, ancient churches, ermitages, olive groves and interesting settlements.

The island is full of sun, stone, green nature and sea, and it is home to the famous white limestone - the Bracer stone - it is known all over the world. With this limestone, many famous and magnificent buildings were erected, such as the White House in Washington and the Parliament in Vienna.

Sumartin is a picturesque place, located in one of the bays on the southeast side of the island of Brac.

The port of Sumartin (originally called Vrhbrac) on the south-eastern Cape of Brac, founded the inhabitants of the Ottoman Turks, who were docked here in 1646.

In the already defined land conditions on the island, they had to deal with fishing, seafaring and shipbuilding. A small shipyard is still active in the village today.

The foundations of the Franciscan monastery were laid in 1747 by the famous Dalmatian poet Andrija Kacic-Miosic, on the site of the church of St. Martin built in the Middle Ages, after which Sumartin was given the name.

Thanks to its ferry port, Sumartin now has 618 inhabitants, as well as Supetar and Bol, the entrance port of the island of Brac. The economic base is agriculture, viticulture, olive cultivation, fishing and tourism.

The ferry service with Makarska (5 times a day during the main season), tourist yachts and local fishing boats as well as a visit to the beautiful monastery museum make a lovely holiday destination.

Beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea are a paradise for every visitor. The green nature, the gastronomic offer and the friendliness of the hosts are the guarantee for unforgettable relaxation.
The clean sea (bathing in the harbor), the fresh fish from the local fishermen, the wonderful nature, the contact with the unspoilt island environment where healthy food is produced (cheese, honey, lamb meat, wine) and entertainment in the nearby town Bol (with famous Golden Horn, Zlatni Rat) make Sumartin an attractive place to stay. The idyllic old town of Selca (2km from Sumartin) is always worth a visit. In the immediate vicinity of Sumartin there are some quiet and hidden coves (Rasotica, Zukovik, Radovnja, Studena, Zvirje and Spilice) with pebble beaches.
